Right-wing hawks highlight the liabilities of friendship with Israel

“Jerusalem is not a settlement, it is our capitol.” Touted a defiant Benjamin Netanyahu at the pro-Israel Lobby AIPAC convention on Tuesday. Further entrenching his position on Israeli settlements. Just days ago the White House blasted an announcement by Israeli officials of their plan to build 1600 new housing settlements in East Jerusalem. (Part of the occupied West Bank claimed by Palestinians as their capitol.)

The fact that the announcement came as Vice President Joe Biden was visiting the region in an effort to restart Mid East peace talks made many see it as a virtual ‘pimp slap’ to it’s strongest supporter. You would think that certain kinds of pressure to cooperate from powerful friends would prove fruitful. Last Saturday, UN secretary Ban Ki-moon along with secretary of state Hillary Clinton joined other mid east mediators known as the ‘Quartet’ in Moscow to speak with one voice on the issue. Ki-moon rejected Israel's distinction between east Jerusalem and the West Bank, noting that both are occupied lands. "The world has condemned Israel's settlement plans in east Jerusalem," Ban told a news conference after his brief tour. "Let us be clear. All settlement activity is illegal anywhere in occupied territory and must be stopped."[1]

Netanyahu met privately with President Obama this week at the White House, both hoping to walk away with concessions and a cooling of what some say is largest rift in Israel / US relations in some 30 years. In short, the Israeli Prime Minister agreed to “withhold” from further announcements that may stifle peace talks, but did not budge on the settlements and said they would go ahead as normal. This week's outcome marks the second time the Obama administration has pressed Netanyahu on Jewish settlements outside the country's pre-1967 borders, only to come away with diddly squat.

It’s surreal that Israel wields so much power and influence that it can so blatantly defy calls to reason from its closest ally and biggest donor. Even weeks of bad press couldn’t temper their avarice. Aside from the Joe Biden debacle, news reports from Al Jazreera state that Israeli forces have killed two Palestinian youths during recent violent clashes in the occupied West Bank. Added to that, Britain announced Tuesday that it had expelled an Israeli diplomat over the use of fake UK passports by a hit-squad that killed a Hamas operative in the United Arab Emirates. In spite of all of this, Israel refuses to back down or show any seriousness in wanting to actually deal with the Palestinians or with reality.

To the untrained outsider, it would seem Israel is the winner in all of this. However, there are some unintended consequence that may come back to bite Israel when they least expect it. Israel’s right-wing, hawkish attitude toward Obama is beginning to put off his supporters within the Democratic Party. A poll released by the Arab American Institute says that support for Israel has droped 13 percentage points among Democrats, and that unfavorable views shot up 17 points.[2]
It used to be only small pockets of anti-Semitic hate groups that spoke of the subversive Israeli lobby, but now questions about Israel’s influence on the US government are coming from former friendly quarters. The Washington Post recently printed an article that pondered over the effectiveness of a
withdrawal of US aid
[3]. The increase of anti-Israeli sentiment is palpable amongst Israelis. As one Jewish blogger called it a “wave of anti-Israeli hatred that has engulfed the globe."

Israel has recently said that it wants dealing with Iran’s nuclear capability to be America’s top priority or else. If Israel defies US wishes and attacks Iran in some kind of pre-emptive strike, it just might bring things to a breaking point. Israel will find itself labeled as too big a liabiity; as the brother who has become all too heavy.
