Know, may Allah open your hearts to guidance, that Allah has not created us and this life that we witness for sport and play, but rather he has created this brief lifespan of ours to test which one of us is best in deed. Allah says:
They weren't afraid that Allah would not give them their reward. Allah has promised that He will pay the believers their reward in full and even more. But rather they were afraid that they did not fulfill the conditions of worship as commanded by Allah. They were uncertain that they did not somehow make their deeds deficient, that perhaps they did something that would render their deeds invalid. Disbelief, Polythiesm, Apostasy, & Hypocrisy And whosoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will be lost in this life and in the Hereafter, and they will be the dwellers of the Fire. They will abide therein forever." (Al-Baqarah 2:217) and this is a shubha (troublesome doubt) for some people, especially those who converted to Islaam or those who are not grounded in knowledge. We see people like Martin Luther King Jr. & Muhatmah Ghandi, their own disbelieving family members such as their parents and Grandparents and the likes. Some even say "W'Allahi the one who invented the iphone and the ipad, he's gonna get the paradise insha Allah!!!" When asked why they reply, "Because his father was from Syria and because he made so many great inventions!" They see peoples good deeds, get confused and wonder "How can these people not be forgiven and treated as Muslims in the hereafter?" Let's end the confusion with a hadeeth from your messenger (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ). Again on the authority of A'isha when she asked about Abudullah ibn Jadh'aan who was well known in the pre-Islamic days for being a kindhearted and generous benefactor to many. She asked, "O' Messenger of Allah, Abdullah ibn Jadh'aan in the days of Jahiliyah used to keep good relations with his kin and feed the poor. Will that benefit him?: The prophet replied: -"No, for (he never once made dua sincerely.) He never said on any day, O'Allah forgive me my sins on the day of judgement." Bukhari & Muslim. This was hard on Aa'ishah because she was so aware of his good deeds, but she understood. While no one can have doubts about the wonderful aftereffects of doing good, we must remember that no one can enter into eternal paradise simply because of their good deeds alone. Another very serious violation that will nullify the deeds is to engage in bid'ah! البدعة - Innovations / Heresy In order for worship to be accepted by Allah it must follow two conditions. 1. It must be sincere for the sake of Allah alone. 2. Performing that action according to the Sunnah of the prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ) . Innovations break these pillars and render the deed null and void. البدعة - Innovation is an action, statement or belief, done in imitation of the Shariah by which nearness to Allah is sought, which has no basis in the authentic texts of the religion. Let's give an example so that our minds are not thrashing about. Making dhikr by just saying the word الله Allah. This is a statement, imitating the dhikr that the prophet prescribed. But it has no basis in the authentic texts. No where in the Quran and Sunnah do you find the prophet teaching us to make dhikr by just one word الله but rather with complete and qualifying statements such as SubhanAllah, Al hamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, etc. So the prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ) has said : "Whoever innovates in this affair of ours somthing which is not from it, then it is rejected." (Al-Bukhari) and he also said in the famous hadeeth of Irbadh ibn Sariyah: وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور ؛ فإن كل محدثة بدعة ، وكل بدعة ضلالة "And beware of newly invented matters. For every newly invented matter is a bid'ah and every biday is going astray." This is a clear refutation to those who think that some religious innovations are good and only some are bad. All of the books of creed contain the same thing in one part or another (abandoning innovation and the innovators). So I warn myself and all of you to stay far from bid'ah. And I warn you with a double warning, because bid'ah has become widespread and very few of the people have been saved from it. We should run away from bid'ah and oppose it strongly. Because we have been given enough. One of the companions has said "Follow and don't innovate, you have been given enough." Another matter that destroys the good deeds is ترك الصلاة (العصر - Abandoning the Prayer - Especially Asr Allah has ordered every Muslim to establish the prayer. But has laid special emphasis on Salatul Asr. Guard strictly your prayers, especially the middle prayer and stand before Allah in devoted. (Al-Baqarah: 283) The person who abandons the Asr prayer, Allah and His messenger have warned them with a stern warning. The prophet has said, 'Whoever leaves the Asr prayer, then his actions will be invalid." (Al-Bukhari) Also الرياء - Showing off: For the one who does deeds just to show the people how great he is, Allah will not give these deeds any consideration. Allah says: Woe to those who pray, those who are headless in their prayer, those who only wish to be seen (praying). (al-Maun: 4- 6) Other actions that make us loose the rewards for our deeds deal with how we relate to our family and community: * Disobedience to parents * Being a disobedient Wife * Boycotting your brother / sister without just cause for more than 3 days, etc. There are many other issues we did not get to discuss. For those who want more information, this khutbah was based off of an excellent book written by Shaykh Saleem Al-Hilaalee one of the leading students of Shaykh Al-Albaani. I pray that we all strive hard to do the most good. But while we do so, let's do our best to protect our worship by fearing Allah's wrath and punishment and also hoping for His reward.
